Elizabeth Enright certainly was a talented childrens’ book author. The book was first published in , which I deem the height of the golden age of children’s literature. They often don’t make kids’ books like these anymore. What I love about Gone-Away Lake is the realistic POV of the children characters. They view summer as we all.

Gone-Away Lake is an excellent story for any age, but might be most particularly enjoyed by anyone who grew up in New York State in the s. Portia and her brother Foster, who are 6 and 11 years old when their parents put them on a train in New York City (BY THEMSELVES) for a trip to visit their cousins in a small town in Upstate New York/5(98).

In this book, published inPortia and her cousin Julian, exploring the woods near Julian's new house, discover Gone-Away Lake, which is actually a vast swamp. They learn it used to be a lake called Tarrigo and a summer resort community in the s/5.

Return To Gone-Away is a continuation of Gone-Away Lake and picks up 6 months after the first book ends. I have always enjoyed Elizabeth Enright's writing.

Though her books are written for young people they still have Gone-Away Lake book adult appeal. She paints word pictures that stir the imagination/5(46).

They search a little longer and meet Minnehaha Cheever and her brother, Pindar Payton. The elderly siblings used to spend every summer in the area, when the swamp was Tarrigo Lake. After a dam was built, the water drained away, and now the area is known as Gone-Away Lake.

At its core, Gone-Away Lake is a quiet, peaceful book with kind, gentle characters and minimal conflict. You will be swept up in the scene descriptions and fall in love with Pinder and Minnehaha, Julian and Portia and all of the other well-imagined friends. Listen to this book!!!.

An engaging family story by the author-illustrator of the Melendy adventures (see Spider Web for Two, etc.) takes Portia Blake, 10, through an exciting ummer of detecting and discovery with her 12 year old and very nature-minded cousin Julian Jarman.

It is the Jarmans who live in the country and the Blake children, Portia and her six year old brother Foster, who wish they : Elizabeth Enright. In general, though, I found this a less satisfying book than the three I’ve read in the Melendy series.

First of all, I greatly missed the presence of a character like Rush Melendy, with his big, brainy vocabulary, witticisms and clever comebacks. There is no one at all like Rush in Gone-Away Lake.

There isn’t even a salt-of-the earth type /5(22). Basically, this is a book about walking through a portal into another world, but instead of witches and goblins there are just good-hearted grown-ups and real-life treasure troves.

OK, by now you’ve probably guessed that Gone-Away Lake is a children’s book, but don’t let that stop you from picking it up.

I love this book. I loved it as a kid, and I love it now. I read Gone-Away Lake over and over as a pre-teen, and I vaguely could remember now what it was about -- some kids who find an abandoned village -- but I really didn't recall the son found this on my shelves a couple of years ago and fell in love with it too, and he's nearly destroyed my copy Author: Hamlette (Rachel).
